A redevelopment of the old Woolworths headquarters, 242 Marylebone Road is adopting a low carbon approach to refurbishment. This £600k project saw our piling subsidiary GSS Piling provide specialist restricted access piling services for contractor ISG Ltd. This included constructing 231 contiguous wall piles and 32 bearing piles in and around the existing structure being modified.
The contiguous wall piles were installed as either 450 mm segmental flight auger (SFA) when external to the structure or as 350/406 mm case and auger piles when installed internally. The bearing piles, up to 28.5 m deep, were installed in restricted headroom using the case and auger method. We also constructed several crane base piles by the same method and returned to site at a later date to install a secant wall for a lift pit.
The design of the piling was carried out in house. We also provided the pile attendances, including the removal of spoil via a conveyor system.

Challenges

In line with ISG’s more sustainable strategy, we used low emission Klemm 702 and 709 piling rigs. These were mobilised over the course of several visits during a six-month period ending in early 2023.
Logistical challenges also presented themselves as accessing the works area required going below street level.
