The expansion of ExCel London upholds the centre’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading conference and event hubs. Two of our subsidiaries – GSS Piling and Morrisroe Demolition – collaborated on this project.
GSS Piling provided specialist mini piling, groundworks and reinforced concrete services to the general contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine. More than 100 bearing piles supported a reinforced concrete slab running parallel to the existing dock wall. The piles were installed to depths of 25 m using the segmental flight auger (SFA) method and two Klemm 709 drilling rigs. The ground conditions proved to be challenging with soft sediments encountered to depth.

After three weeks, GSS Piling demobilised to make way for the Formula E Grand Prix at the exhibition site. The structural works team subsequently returned to site for 11 weeks to carry out pile trimming, road drainage and construct a 300 mm thick reinforced concrete slab with local thickenings at pile positions.
The works finished in Autumn 2022 with a value in excess of £1.1 million. The team were delighted to receive great feedback from the client who commended their professionalism and safety behaviours.
