Adding to our portfolio of landmark sporting venues, we were very proud to be part of the delivery team for the Commonwealth Games 2022 swimming venue: The Sandwell Aquatics Centre.
We were appointed in Spring 2020 by principal contractor Wates Construction Ltd. to undertake the RC substructure and composite superstructure packages. This included the construction of the 50 m Olympic-sized swimming pool, 25 m dive pool and community pool, along with the surrounding wet and dry ducts, plant room, drainage and waterproof surround slabs.

Water Retaining Structure
02
Working closely with WCL and designer Arup, we developed a detailed pour sequence and programme to manage concrete shrinkage and achieve a water retaining structure in line with the project specification. This complex waterproof and water retaining basement shares many features more in common with large scale civils schemes, including intricate reinforcement detailing for the transfer channels, balance tanks and wet ducts.
COVID Challenges
03
With the bulk of the work completed during the spring and summer of 2020, the site faced considerable challenges during the COVID lockdown. However, working closely with WCL, the Local Authority and our workforce and supply chain, we were able to achieve the project targets and ensure the steel superstructure was able to start on programme.
